From Government Funding to "Real World" Economics: IESC and USAID Map a New Plan Austin, TX--A bold new experiment is underway to transform a government-funded economic development organization to a market-competitive, self-sustaining and profitable business entity. The International Executive Service Corps (IESC) is an organization with close ties to the State Department that focuses on nurturing economic development around the world by providing unsurpassed business consulting services. IESC receives its primary funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), but IESC is using its success in three key international markets to test the program's commercial viability and market competitiveness on a wider scale. "Mexico is one of IESC's success stories," says Joe Garvey, IESC country manager for Mexico. "We've been able to demonstrate that we can move from a sponsorship, to a market- or revenue-based operational model. The services we provide have tremendous value, and we've successfully communicated that to an enthusiastic Mexican client base." Under the senior supervision of Jay Pati, IESC will continue to foster Garvey's Mexico success to bring it to the level of self-sustainability enjoyed in two other key geographic regions; the Caribbean and Central & South American through country manager Patricia Alvarez, and Eastern Europe through country manager John Bowman. Since its inception, IESC has had a dramatic impact in the world. In developing countries, it has generated more than $3.25 billion in increased sales for the world economy, client exports of almost $500 million, client capital investments of $1.75 billion, and created more than 1 million jobs. Annually, IESC has facilitated sales of millions of dollars worth of American goods and services to its overseas clients. Under the new model, IESC will continue its powerful work, while delivering additional benefits to every US taxpayer through its new self-funding model. Founded in 1964 by a group led by David Rockefeller, the International Executive Service Corp (IESC) taps the talent of over 12,000 captains of American business to provide managerial and technical guidance to small- and medium-sized enterprises, business associations and non-governmental agencies in the developing countries and the emerging democracies around the world. |
